Workshops

We offer Bibliotherapy Workshops, with a particular focus on mental health and wellbeing for adolescents. The learning objective is to introduce teachers, librarians and parents to the practice of bibliotherapy – reading as a practice in the toolkit of young people as they address issues of stress, social anxiety and other challenges to mental health and wellbeing. Through a mix of presentations, breakout sessions and practical exercises, participants will both learn about and experience a multitude of techniques for enthusing young people about books and reading in ways that will also provide students of all ages with educational enrichment in the form of coping strategies and resilience in a time when mental health issues are especially acute. We have worked with The Mayo Clinic, a high-security prison, a hospice, an adolescent mental health facility, a veterans’ organization, a group of primary care physicians, and a halfway house for women re-entering society. From 2017 to 2020 we ran a summer school in Oxford, England, devoted to creativity and wellbeing:

2017: “The Writer, the Artist and their Notebook”

2018: “The Green Life of Change: Artists, Writers and Appreciators”

2019: “Taking a Pause: The Art of Rest and Reflection”

2020: “The slow pulling down of green stalks: seeing and thinking more slowly, calmly and spaciously”
